Beauty, Inside and Out

March 23, 2016

Chicago's Pipeworks Brewing only start distributing to New York a few months ago and since then I've had a chance to drink several beers that they put out and I have not been dissapointed, as noted in my post about the Citra Imperial IPA. I've had a chance to try a few of their limited release beers like Da Fuzz and Crimson Snapper, both of which I really enjoyed. I'm hear to talk about two of their more frequently released beers and two beers that get a lot of attention in the NYC.

Every few weeks Ninja vs. Unicorn, a double IPA and Lizard King, a mosaic hopped pale ale get dropped off in stores and restaurants and they don't stay there for very long. For one thing, these beers have eye catching can art, the NvU is brightly colored and could be mistaken as two different beers depending on how you hold the can and Lizard Kind is just a bright green mess, in the best way possible. As cool looking as the cans are that will only get you so far in the beer world, once you crack open both of these beers you quickly understand their popularity.

Lizard King smells the way you'd expect a great mosaic hopped beer to smell, lots of citrus, more orange than lemon and the taste is crips, slightly bitter all of that great citrus follows the nose. It's fairly thin bodied but in line with what you'd expect from a 6% abv pale ale. It's a little too high to be a true session ale but you could easily drink a four pack of this and never look back. Just make sure to eat a pretzel or a brat at some point.

NvU packs a much bigger punch at 9% abv, as soon as you crack open the can you get heavy pine on the nose with some grape fruit, I poured it into an IPA glass and got more tropical fruit. It's definitely sticky being that it's such a big beer but dry and refreshing. This is one of those beers that is truely dangerous because you can knock them back as fast as the Lizard Kings but get into trouble but as long as you're being responsible this is a damn good beer.
